In the midst of the current stories we are seeing in the news concerning breaches of security from companies like DropBox and Apple, I thought I'd share a very neat utility you can use to safeguard the private information you save or have deleted from your computer.
BleachBit is a free, open-source software that can securely shred your hard drive's empty space by getting rid of any past files you might of deleted and thought that were gone for good. It deletes them in a manner as to avoid recovery. Why is this important? When you delete a file it simply removes the reference to that file from the operating system so the actual file is still there until it is overwritten by the creation of a new file that happens to be saved in the same disk area as the one deleted. With a recovery application, someone can bring back the files that have not been overwritten yet.
As you can see this is not very safe so this piece of software allows you to get rid of them for good as well as any current file you want to securely delete. In addition, it also wipes clean hundreds of applications that contain data. BleachBit is definitely worth having in your security arsenal. You do have to be very careful and we always recommend a professional to work on any critical items to avoid incorrect deletion or removal of important files that may damage your system.
