A great way to securely clean your computer system and free disk space.

securelydeletefiles.jpg

In the midst of the current stories we are seeing in the news concerning breaches of security from companies like DropBox and Apple, I thought I'd share a very neat utility you can use to safeguard the private information you save or have deleted from your computer.

BleachBit is a free, open-source software that can securely shred your hard drive's empty space by getting rid of any past files you might of deleted and thought that were gone for good. It deletes them in a manner as to avoid recovery. Why is this important? When you delete a file it simply removes the reference to that file from the operating system so the actual file is still there until it is overwritten by the creation of a new file that happens to be saved in the same disk area as the one deleted. With a recovery application, someone can bring back the files that have not been overwritten yet.

As you can see this is not very safe so this piece of software allows you to get rid of them for good as well as any current file you want to securely delete. In addition, it also wipes clean hundreds of applications that contain data. BleachBit is definitely worth having in your security arsenal. You do have to be very careful and we always recommend a professional to work on any critical items to avoid incorrect deletion or removal of important files that may damage your system.

You can download the software here.

Reduce the amount of data (GB) YouTube uses while streaming in LTE, 4G or CDMA

Photo by tumpikuja/iStock / Getty Images

I am not sure if it has happened to you, but our last bill from AT&T Wireless was $330 higher because of our data overage.

Even though we have a 40GB plan, we somehow managed to use 63GB. AT&T charges $15 for every additional 1GB, so after seeing our bill this month we were not happy at all.

After doing some research, we found that YouTube was the main culprit. Below you'll find the steps you can take to drastically reduce the amount of data YouTube uses while on the AT&T, Verizon or Sprint carrier.

  1. Open YouTube
  2. Click on the 3 Dots button/icon
  3. Settings
  4. Select to turn on the "Play HD on Wi-Fi Only" option
  5. Close the window
  6. Done

How to add an Email Address to the Safe List to prevent it from going to Spam

We get asked this questions a lot, and our approach is to simply add all of the safe senders to your Address Book, Contact, People List. There are other ways of managing your safe list, but you would need to ask your IT service provider where this list resides. Sometimes it's only managed by IT, so you won't be able to manage.

What we like to provide our clients is a solution that allows them to manage their own list. This has many benefits, including the reduction of IT requests, which saves time and money across the board.

Use Snipping Tool to make Quick Annotations & ScreenShots

You've probably always wondered how can you make notes over what is currently being displayed on the monitor. If you have, then one of the easiest way to do this is by using the program in Windows called Snipping Tool.

Easiest way to find it is by typing Snipping immediately after pressing the Windows Key on the keyboard. The search result will appear with the program "Snipping Tool". Simply click on it and press the "New" button. Then draw the area that you want to take a screenshot of by holding the left mouse button and dragging it to the end, release the button and now a new window will appear with the area you just selected.

From this new window you can highlight or use the pencil to write over the screenshot. You can then Save it, Copy it to the Clipboard or attach it to an email. I typically use the Copy feature to email the screenshot to colleagues. The Copy function is done by clicking the white paper button on top, and then pressing the CTRL + V key to paste it in the email message.

I hope you find this helpful. If you do please click Like and Share with your friend.

2 Monitors are Better than 1

One of the easiest and most cost effective way for you to work faster is to add a second monitor to your PC or Laptop. The fact is you'll be able to use programs simultaneously and reference information without having to minimize and/or switch between programs.

Adding a monitor is very simple, and nearly any monitor Brand or Size will work just fine. The only setup required is for you to physically open the box and then connect the Power and Video Cable.

There are 4 different types of Video Cables and almost all monitors have at least a DVI or VGA port. The first question is, what connector does your computer have.

Below is a gallery of pictures showing you all of the ports that a computer or laptop may have. Once you find yours, just make sure that the monitor to buy has same port.

  1. VGA (Always has a blue port)
  2. DVI (Always has a white port)
  3. HDMI (Same as the TV HDMI port)
  4. DisplayPort (Same as some TV port)

Best Laptop To Buy Right Now - Updated 5-2-16

This is one of the most popular questions we get asked. Here is our recommendation and the reasons why.

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 with an Intel Core i5 6th Gen (latest) Processor, 15 Inch 1080P Touch Screen, 8GB of Ram and 1TB HDD for under $650.

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-Touchscreen-Flagship-RealSense/dp/B01DTV6ISO/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1462188586&sr=8-15

For the price, you really can't ask for more. You get a very nice screen, fast processor and a comfortable to use laptop.

One of the most important features is the screen. Most laptops at this price range have a resolution of 1366 X 768, while this Inspiron has 1920 X 1080. This is a huge difference. Especially since most programs and websites are designed for the bigger size. The 1080 is the length for the height, which is why it is so important since most sites and apps now a days are bigger than 768.

Apple Retina Display - Change the resolution for more usable screen space

I love the Retina Display on my new Apple MacBook Pro 15. The sharpness and clarity are out of this world. It looks as sharp as if you are viewing it in high definition.real life Only problem is that  in the factory settingfrom factory, the display resolution is set to the Default setting. Which would be is okay except the user would not be for the fact that you aren’t taking advantage of the additional desktop usable space available. See the screenshots below for an example. Follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to a more spacious laptop.

Instructions: Apple Sign \ System Preferences \ Display \ Scaled \ Select More Space for the Maximum Resolution Option

The Facebook Copyright Text is Fake. You Don't Need to Share It.

I'm sure you have noticed the bit of legal-sounding text that your friends have been posting on Facebook. Here is an example:

"As of September 29th, 2015 at ##:## pm. Eastern Standard Time, I do not give Facebook or any entities associated with Facebook permission..."

Yes that one. It's meaningless. You don't need to share it in order to protect your privacy.
